Types of Treatments
Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are still the gold standard of orthodontic treatment. They are made of advanced stainless steel alloys and bonded directly to the enamel of the teeth. A great option for many people!
Clear/ Ceramic Braces
Clear braces combine the power and control of traditional braces with improved aesthetics. These high-tech braces are made of polycrystalline sapphire. Since they are translucent and tooth colored, they minimize the appearance of the braces when you talk, smile, and laugh.
Elastics
Almost everybody will need to wear elastics, or “rubber bands,” at some point during their treatment. While the braces or aligners straighten your teeth, the elastics will pull your teeth together in the right direction to correct the bite.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners, such as Invisalign®, consist of a series of clear plastic trays that snap in over the teeth. They are custom made for each patient in a sophisticated CAD/CAM process using a computer projection of how your teeth are expected to move. Clear aligners offer the ultimate in aesthetics and convenience.
Space Maintainers
Space maintainers are used when a baby tooth is lost early, to hold onto the space for the permanent tooth to erupt.
Palatal Expanders
Palatal expanders are used to widen an upper jaw that is too narrow relative to the lower jaw.
Retainers
Retainers are worn to keep the teeth from shifting after the braces or aligners are done.
Functional Appliances
These correct bite issues that result from a lower jaw that is too small. They work by positioning the lower jaw forward into the correct bite, thereby encouraging the forward growth of the lower jaw while holding back the upper jaw. Examples include the Herbst, MARA, Bionator, and Twin Block appliances
TADs
A relatively recent innovation in orthodontics, TADs (or Temporary Anchorage Devices) are small attachments that are placed into the bone next to the teeth. They allow Dr. Elgin to move the teeth in ways that were previously difficult or impossible.
Surgical Orthodontics
In cases of severe jaw size mismatches, or when the patient desires a dramatic change in facial appearance, surgical orthodontics may be the best option. Here, Dr. Elgin works closely with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to coordinate the orthodontic tooth movement with a jaw surgery.
