Meet Dr Elgin

Elgin Orthodontics Coos Bay OregonGreetings, Internet traveler! I’m Craig Elgin, the South Oregon Coast’s local orthodontist. If you were to guess that I’m the guy in the photo who looks shocked by his good fortune to be surrounded by such a beautiful family, you would be right!

There are only a few things you really need to know about me:

1. I am a perfectionist. I am always looking out for new ways to get the best possible results, with the greatest comfort and convenience, in the shortest possible time. There is nowhere you can go to get better orthodontic care.

2. I genuinely believe in that well-worn adage that you should treat other people how you would like to be treated. Chances are, you or your child do not appear in that photo at the top of the page. But when you entrust me with your orthodontic treatment, you become part of the Elgin Orthodontics family, and I will take care of you like one of my own.

3. My family and I live right here in the Coos Bay area. We care about our community and the quality of life here, so we are always supporting local causes and events. Most importantly for my patients, I am always here, so if you should have an after-hours urgent orthodontic concern I will personally take care of you.

If you would still like to learn more, grab a cup of something tasty, put up your feet, and treat yourself to my stodgy official biography…

Dr. Elgin’s Stodgy Official Biography
Craig Elgin was born and raised in beautiful Santa Cruz, California. As a child, he wanted to grow up to be a Jedi knight, or possibly a ninja. While working out how to realize these dreams, he bounced along through life, eventually graduating as a valedictorian from Santa Cruz High School.

Craig then resettled in Portland, Oregon – the City of Roses. There, he attended Lewis & Clark College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, a minor in Physics, and securing a coveted membership in the Sigma Pi Sigma national physics honor society.

He then spent four years at Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry, where he was top of his class, earned his DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) with Honors, was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society, and received numerous other prestigious and important sounding awards.

But the story does not end there! Next, he bundled up his young family and moved eastward, over the Rocky Mountains, through the Great Plains, across the sea of swirly-twirly gumdrops, (if you don’t recognize the Elf reference, this is a movie you should certainly check out!) and arrived at last in scenic Columbus, Ohio.

At the rigorous and world-renowned orthodontics residency program of The Ohio State University, he was taught by the people who literally wrote the book on orthodontics (several of them, actually). During his years in Columbus, he conducted clinical research leading to a Master of Science degree, attended scholarly conferences, practiced in the university orthodontic clinic, and treated syndromic and cleft lip/palate patients as part of the multi-specialty craniofacial team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He eventually learned so much about making teeth straighter that he was given a Certificate in Orthodontics and informed that while he didn’t need to go home, he could no longer stay there.

His formal education at last complete, and with his brain now worth more than his house, Dr. Elgin moved back West and practiced orthodontics in Spokane, Washington for several years. He finally returned to Oregon when he was selected by Dr. Craig Stephenson to take over his longstanding orthodontic practice and care for the next generations on the South Coast.

Craig is thrilled to call the Coos Bay area home. From his first visit, he has been struck by the region’s natural beauty, matched only by the beauty of the friendly and open hearts of its people. When he is not immersed in deep thoughts about teeth, he enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, exercise, mycology, zymology, dancing like nobody is watching, wood carving, exploring the great outdoors and making shocking noises on a variety of musical instruments.

Mission & Values

At Elgin Orthodontics, our mission is simple:
To make the world a better place, one smile at a time. 😄

Our values…

Integrity

We understand that when you come to our office, you are here for our expertise and are placing your trust in us. We consider this an honor and a privilege. When we need the knowledge or services of another professional – be it our physician, our accountant, our auto mechanic, or our librarian – we are in the same position of trust!
We will always communicate with you clearly and honestly, lay out your available options, and then let you decide. We will never pressure you or oversell our services. In short, we will treat you as we would want to be treated.

Quality

We are obsessive about quality and believe our results speak for themselves. Dr. Elgin is a perfectionist who trained with the best to be the best. Not content to rest on our laurels, we are committed to the process of continuous improvement. We are always reviewing and refining our methods, looking for new ways to deliver better results, with greater comfort, in less time. We undergo extensive continuing education every year to find and bring back the latest proven methods and technologies.
Even more important than the tools, though, are the people using them. We embrace a team-centered approach and work closely with you and your dentist to provide seamless care that is customized just for you. There is an old saying in the dental profession that “a good dentist needs the three Hs – hands, head, and heart.” You will not find a more caring, knowledgeable, and skilled team of professionals than the smile artists at Elgin Orthodontics. There is no place you can go to receive better orthodontic care.

Empathy

Life is hard enough already. We don’t want your time in our office to be just a means to an end – we want it to be the highlight of your day! From the moment you step in the front door, you can expect to be greeted with a warm smile, enjoy our clean and comfortable reception and treatment areas, and be treated to our world class customer service. Any concerns or questions you may have coming in will be quickly and fully addressed, allowing you to relax and enjoy your visit. We promise to always give you our best, each time we see you. We respect your time and strive to see all patients as scheduled, so when your appointment with us is complete, you can leave refreshed and go about your day as planned. We are open by far the most days of any orthodontist in the region, providing you the most flexibility in scheduling appointments to accommodate your busy schedule and quickly addressing any urgent care needs that may arise.

Community

When you become our patient, you become part of our extended family. We are the only local, full-time orthodontic provider serving the South Oregon Coast. Dr. Elgin and all members of the team live right here in Coos County with our families. We own homes and pay taxes here. We shop at local businesses. Our children attend school here. Your financial investment in your new smile stays right here in your community – it is also an investment in the region.
We provide direct financial and material support to numerous local causes, events, schools, and charitable organizations. Dr. Elgin is a member of the local chapter of Rotary International as well the Coos Bay / North Bend Chamber of Commerce.
We form partnerships with other local businesses to provide the supplies and services that keep us running. We are committed to economically and environmentally responsible business practices that will foster sustainable growth and investment in our area.
We believe in having great people on our team by fostering a supportive, fun, family atmosphere. We offer our employees fair wages and benefits that allow them to support themselves and their families. We believe in the South Coast!
